Ypsylon Resort in Detail

Your Ayurveda Resort

Located amidst about 5 hectares of enchanting flora and fauna and directly on a 200m wide private cove (sandy beach seasonal), the idyllic and tranquil Ypsylon Resort blends perfectly into the landscape. The family-run Ypsylon, with a seasonally open diving school, is also highly committed to environmental protection. Autonomous self-sufficiency, waste separation/recycling, energy production/saving, and resource recovery are prioritized in a specially designated 'environmental zone' near the resort. These measures are unique in Sri Lanka and are supported by the state.

Location & Surroundings

Beruwela is one of the oldest cities on the west coast of Sri Lanka, where a lighthouse built by colonial powers stands on a small island in front of the harbour. The reef extending from it protects the miles-long sandy beach up to the Bentota River.

Restaurants

Next to the Ayurveda Center, exclusively reserved for Ayurveda guests, is the Ayurveda Pavilion with an open buffet. The day starts with a 'Nature Smile Smoothie', and for lunch and dinner, traditional Ayurvedic cuisine is served, low-calorie, vegetarian, mixed with local side dishes. On request, lean white fish or chicken is available.

A public à la carte restaurant with national and international dishes is located at the front of the resort. Many herbs and ingredients are sourced from their own cultivation.

Ayurveda Center

The Ayurveda Center, located in the garden area of the resort, is led by experienced Ayurvedic doctors. You will be greeted by a skilled and trained team of therapists, multiple treatment rooms for Shirodhara, oil massages, baths, acupuncture, an Ayurvedic steam bath, and a herbal sauna. Additionally, therapy-supportive yoga and meditation sessions are available upon request (approximately 10€ (approx. UK £9 / USD $11) per hour). Handmade herbal-based natural medicine is used, following traditional Ayurvedic recipes.

Free Time

The pool is located in the garden, surrounded by exotic greenery. The sheltered bay invites you to swim (seasonal). The resort offers its own diving school (seasonal), table tennis, and beach volleyball. There are numerous cultural and sporting excursion opportunities, such as the weekly market in Aluthgama, Cinnamon Island, and a river cruise on the Bentota River (bookable on site). Sri Lanka alone boasts 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

My conclusion is that I would book the Hotel Ypsylon again at any time. But only during the rainy season. It did rain from time to time, but overall it was rather rare. The benefits of the rainy season are that there are very few guests in the hotel, which creates a very calm and healthy atmosphere. Every day 2 hours of treatments, half an hour of acupuncture and 3 times a day delicious, easy to get and tasty food. Our favorite therapist was definitely Pinsiri, who impressed us with his expertise and experience, especially with the massages. As the hotel only had a few guests at this time of year, we were also able to enjoy a room with a sea view. Simply fantastic. At 7.00 a.m. we had yoga with the doctor himself. There were also plenty of excursion options from the hotel, such as the mangrove forests, turtle rescue station and national park. Unfortunately, the beach is not available in winter. But if you take a 5-minute walk, you will find a sandy beach and a bay near the hotel that is protected by a reef, so you can swim there safely. The only disadvantage of this beach are the many German-speaking traders, who can be very annoying.

Relaxing, quiet
