Tree of Life in Detail

Your Ayurveda Resort

Located inland, amidst lush greenery and tea plantations about 8.7 miles from Kandy, the privately managed Tree of Life Ayurveda & Nature Resort spans approximately 160 acres. The resort, with a separate Ayurveda Village for Ayurveda guests, was established in 1900 and provided guesthouses during the era of the last Kingdom of Kandy. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, nestled among more than 200 native tree species and soothing bird songs, a blend of colonial and modern architecture awaits you. Enjoy the peace, idyll and focus entirely on your well-deserved break!

Location & Surroundings

In the heart of Sri Lanka, the city of Kandy, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, is situated at an altitude of about 1640 feet surrounded by hills along the Mahaweli River. The elevation and the man-made lake in the city centre ensure significantly cooler temperatures than in the lowlands, averaging 75°F. The surrounding area attracts with a rich history and breathtaking landscapes.

Dining & Leisure

Main restaurant for local and international dishes, optionally Ayurvedic. In the Ayurveda Village, 'Ayu' restaurant, exclusively for Ayurveda guests with fresh, local and Sinhalese 'Super Foods'. Ayurveda guests receive tips from the Ayurveda doctor on which dishes are recommended or should be avoided according to the doshas.

Ayurveda Center

"Saukya" (Sinhalese for health) features an experienced team including a German-speaking Ayurvedic doctor (over 20 years of experience) and several therapists. 7 treatment rooms for traditional treatments such as Abhyanga oil massages, Pinda Sveda herbal poultice massages, Shirodhara oil forehead flow, Ayurvedic steam bath, herbal wraps and sauna, as well as aromatherapy in a traditional Sinhalese clay hut in the garden. Yoga and meditation complete your Ayurvedic retreat.

Spectacular Birdwatching Adventure

The Tree of Life is a true paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. Immerse yourself in the natural habitat of the feathered island dwellers, enjoy the unique biodiversity in tranquil silence, and listen to the chirping. From the majestic Crested Eagle to the Bengal Pitta and the colourful Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, you can look out for 113 bird species throughout the year. With the Ceylon Parakeet, you even have the unique opportunity to observe an endemic species that is native only to Sri Lanka. Conservation of nature and species is a matter close to the hotel's heart. Strict regulations and various projects contribute to protecting the birds in their natural habitat without disturbance or threat.

Attractions

The most famous attraction in and around Kandy is undoubtedly the Temple of the Tooth, which still serves as a pilgrimage site and monastery for many Buddhists. The temple houses a tooth of Buddha from the 4th century. The golden Buddha statue on Bahirawakanda Hill is visible from many parts of the city. Kandy Lake is perfect for an evening stroll. About 5 km west of the city lies the Peradeniya Botanical Garden, considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Asia, attracting more than a million visitors annually. Here, you can admire many (sub-)tropical plants, including one of the world's largest Banyan trees ("Benjamin").
