Perched on a cliff, the historic 5-star luxury hotel of the Raviz Group, The Leela Kovalam, a Raviz Hotel, is located on the rocky promontories of the coastal town of Kovalam, in the southern state of Kerala. It features white walls, red tiled roofs, and expansive sun decks with stunning panoramic views over Kovalam Beach and the sea. The 67-hectare resort also includes the historic Halcyon Castle, now Kovalam Palace, once the summer residence of the royal family of Travancore and now the official guesthouse of the Government of Kerala for state visits.

Dining & Leisure

"The Terrace" (open 24 hours) offers the finest from Asian, European, or Indian cuisine (buffet) with a unique sea view. For Ayurveda guests, meals are prepared internationally but according to Ayurvedic principles and served individually based on their dosha. At the open beach restaurant "The Tides", fresh seafood specialties are grilled to perfection. Additionally, "The Sky Bar" and "The Bar" provide inviting spaces to relax and unwind.

The approximately 700 sqm Favorite Kerala Ayurveda & Spa is managed by several doctors, including Ayurveda specialists, supported by a professional team of therapists. It has been awarded the Green Leaf Award by the Department of Tourism of Kerala, the highest accolade for authentic Ayurveda. Treatments, tailored to individual needs and constitution by the Ayurveda doctor, include Udvartana powder massage, Pinda Sveda herbal compress massage, Shirodhara oil forehead flow, Abhyanga or Pizhichil massage, Mukhalepam facial care, and Njavarakizhi rice bundle massage. The herbs are sourced from the hotel's own organic greenhouse, and treatments are conducted in renovated and newly equipped consultation and treatment rooms (indoor and outdoor). Furthermore, a fitness studio, yoga and meditation center with various platforms and rooms, and a beauty salon are available.

There are premium sea view rooms (approx. 46 sqm) with balconies on the cliffs or overlooking the beach, club rooms (recommended for Ayurveda guests) and suites on the cliff edge with sea views in the exclusive club wing. These rooms feature butler service, a separate lounge, club spa and pool, "The Café", and a library. The garden view and sea view rooms (approx. 44 sqm) are located a bit away from the main building near a mosque and a temple. Single rooms are double rooms for single use.

General conditions Not a pure Ayurveda resort, but a large hotel with a wide range of gastronomic offerings. Many culinary temptations (buffets, bars, cafés) directly on the premises. Own Ayurveda restaurant available, but not completely isolated in terms of space and atmosphere. Requirements for guests High level of discipline and self-motivation required to consistently adhere to the healing therapies. Practical adjustments necessary (e.g. suitable clothing for oil treatments, longer distances to the spa with a buggy). Nobody wears a bathrobe for lunch, so you should choose your treatment time carefully, as you should leave the oil therapies to take effect for at least 2 hours. Practical restrictions Spa area is remote, transfer by buggy necessary. Low water pressure in the rooms makes it difficult to wash out the oils after treatments. Overall rating Ayurveda Ayurveda retreat basically well organized, but less strict and shielded than in specialized Ayurveda centers; therefore more suitable for guests with strong self-discipline.

Hotel

You are welcomed at the reception of the main building with a shell necklace and a drink from a freshly opened coconut. The staff are extremely helpful. If the Indian food is too spicy for Europeans, they are committed to finding solutions. The resort is large and somewhat confusing at first. There are countless buildings, some of which are construction sites that look like further extensions. One area is called the guest house, another the palace - and looks exactly the same - plus a club area with its own pool, where guests from the main house are not allowed to lie around. There is also, of course, the main house itself. Most of the other Ayurveda guests were accommodated in the "club", with the nicer pool and the perfect view of the sea. This was not offered to me when I booked. The room system should definitely be better explained. The spa area is relatively far away from the main complex, so you are driven there in a buggy. Most of the time you don't wait more than five minutes for the next vehicle. Overall, the hotel makes a very well-kept and tidy impression. Every evening, the entire complex is fumigated with smoke against vermin. Everywhere is not only constantly swept, but the tiles are also scrubbed - cleanliness is really important here.

Treatments

I had relatively little variety in the massages during my one Ayurveda week. They always followed the same pattern: first a head and neck massage, then a body oil massage, then dabbed or doused with water, milk or buttermilk. The doctors enquired about my condition every day and I had the same therapist for a week, with whom I was essentially satisfied. On the last day there was a "beauty treatment with facial". It wasn't really that great, I would have preferred a massage.

Board type

If you want to take an Ayurveda retreat here, you have to be very strong-willed and disciplined. This beautiful hotel is not an Ayurveda-only establishment, and there are culinary temptations everywhere in the form of buffets, bars and small cafés with freshly baked cakes - all right on the hotel grounds. Ayurveda guests have their own restaurant on a rock above the sea, where food is prepared especially for them, but the temptation remains omnipresent.

Wellness area

The hotel has different room categories and assigned pools. Not everyone is allowed in every pool. There are too few sun loungers at the pools overall. The therapeutic spa department is too far to walk, there is a buggy to get there. The staff and doctors in the spa are well trained and friendly.
