Samma Samadhi Ayurveda & Yoga Retreat in Detail
Your Ayurveda & Yoga Retreat
Samma Samadhi, nestled in the quaint village of Payagala on Sri Lanka's west coast, sits directly on a serene sandy beach where the gentle sound of the waves sets the day's rhythm. Opened in 2023, this retreat harmoniously blends yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda into a soothing journey inward, aligning body and mind. The name Samma Samadhi, derived from Pali, the language of Gautama Buddha, translates to "right mindfulness" and symbolizes clarity, tranquility, and conscious presence.
From the balconies, guests enjoy expansive views over the palm garden with a pool to the sparkling Indian Ocean. Under German and Sinhalese management, guests experience a warm, family-like atmosphere marked by genuine care and loving attention. Surrounded by tropical nature and the quiet expanse of the sea, a place unfolds where one can let go, breathe deeply, and simply be.
Location & Surroundings
The Samma Samadhi is nestled in the tranquil coastal town of Payagala South on the west coast of Sri Lanka. Between fine sandy beaches and palm groves, the country remains pristine and unspoiled, ideal for unwinding and relaxing. Only a few small hotels share the beach, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Behind the property, a railway line runs, with trains occasionally passing by, all set against the backdrop of the waves' roar and the rustling of the palms. The coastal towns of Kalutara, Beruwala, and Bentota are easily accessible, as is the verdant hinterland with its tropical landscapes and river courses.
Dining & Leisure
At Samma Samadhi, dining becomes a soothing experience. The Ayurvedic cuisine combines pleasure, mindfulness, and health, freshly prepared daily with local ingredients. Fragrant spices, colourful vegetables, and tropical fruits release their flavours in traditional Tri-Dosha dishes, harmonizing body and mind. The meals are predominantly plant-based and can be complemented with freshly caught fish or chicken upon request. Ayurveda guests receive a Dosha-specific menu, individually tailored to the recommendations of the Ayurveda doctor.
Ayurveda
At the Ayurveda Center, a skilled team comprising an Ayurvedic doctor who speaks German and four therapists dedicate themselves to the well-being of guests. Treatments are conducted in traditionally furnished rooms and cabins, complemented by an Ayurvedic steam bath. Outdoor treatments are available upon request.
The therapy begins with a personal consultation with the doctor, who uses pulse diagnosis and discussion to determine the Dosha type and creates a tailored treatment plan. The programme includes classic treatments such as Abhyanga, Swedana, and Shirodhara, cleansing rituals like Vasti or Nasya, and concludes with a floral bath. Additionally, yoga and meditation are integral parts of the therapy, with physiotherapy available for a fee (15€ (approx. UK £13 / USD $16)/30 min). All Ayurvedic preparations are made from pure, natural ingredients.
Yoga
At Samma Samadhi, yoga is part of a mindful lifestyle. Available styles include Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Kundalini, and Nidra Yoga, along with meditation and Pranayama. Classes are taught by experienced local and European instructors. Yoga sessions with meditation are held once or twice daily. The open yoga veranda with wooden floors and a sea view provides the perfect setting for mindfulness and tranquility. The retreats are suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners, promoting strength, flexibility, and inner peace.
Pool Area
Large outdoor pool with sun-heated freshwater and unobstructed views to the horizon.
Free Time
The expansive sandy beach of Payagala lies directly in front of Samma Samadhi, lightly shielded by a small reef. Just a few steps separate the property from the beach - perfect for barefoot walks, swimming, snorkelling, diving, or simply relaxing in the sun or by the hotel's own pool.
Upon request, boat trips to Barberyn Lighthouse Island or along the Bentota River can be arranged. Nearby, the Kande Vihara Temple, the Beruwala Fish Market, and the city of Kalutara with its walkable pagoda offer fascinating excursion destinations. Nature lovers will find stunning landscapes in the lush hinterland. A guided hike in the Yagirala Rain Forest is highly recommended, where the tropical flora displays its full diversity.

Sustainability
Sustainability is a lived ethos at Samma Samadhi. The hotel actively supports the Sri Lankan community by providing fair employment and training opportunities, and places great emphasis on respect and appreciation in daily interactions.
Energy and hot water are primarily sourced from solar power, and the Ayurvedic cuisine uses regional ingredients from small-scale farms. Wherever possible, waste is minimized, for example, by using reusable glass bottles for refilling drinking water, and careful attention is paid to environmentally responsible disposal.
To offset carbon emissions, Samma Samadhi supports the Rainforest Protectors Trust, which protects and reforests rainforest areas in Sri Lanka. This initiative creates new habitats for endangered species and valuable carbon sinks - a contribution to the protection of nature and the climate.
