A sprawling, eco-conscious Ayurveda resort nestled between the sea and the 'Backwaters' featuring cottages on land and water, including its own solar panels, windmills, and electric cars. Experience classic Ayurveda therapies for detoxification, rejuvenation, and slimming in a serene setting.
Located on the southwest coast of India in the state of Kerala, the Poovar Island Resort is nestled between the Arabian Sea and a picturesque river estuary of the Backwaters, accessible by the hotel's own boat (approx. 10 min., included). The idyllic sandy beach in front of the hotel can be reached after about a 5 min. boat ride (occasional undercurrents and higher surf, therefore not recommended for swimming). The eco-conscious resort is NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) accredited and is set in a tropical garden, spread out like a small village with a main building housing the reception, several outbuildings, and the exclusive Ayurveda Village built for Ayurveda guests with a pool, Ayurveda restaurant, and Ayurveda Center.
As one of the first resorts in Kerala, Poovar Island Resort has installed a solar power system that produces part of the electricity for the resort. Additionally, there are small windmills and solar lights that provide a cosy light in the garden in the evening. A water treatment plant processes the wastewater so that it can be used for irrigating the herb and vegetable garden. The harvested herbs, as well as the fruits and vegetables, are used in the preparation of Ayurvedic dishes and oils. A solar boat and several electric cars transport the guests. These and many other actions in the resort and the nearby area mark it as a model of sustainable tourism in its region.
Overlooking the pool and garden, authentic Ayurvedic cuisine (vegetarian) is served in the Ayurveda Restaurant. For resident guests, there is a separate non-Ayurvedic main restaurant "Tiffins" offering continental and Asian specialties.
The Ayurveda Center spans an area of about 64,583 sq ft and has been awarded the Green Leaf Award. It features a qualified team comprising 2 Ayurveda doctors and around 20 therapists. The facility is surrounded by picturesque streams and gardens, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Guests can enjoy authentic Ayurveda treatments in 10 bright treatment rooms, tailored to the needs of predominantly Western guests. The intensity of the Ayurveda therapies is adjusted according to the duration of stay.
Additionally, the center offers dental consultations and treatments such as bleaching, payable on-site (approx. INR 1500/€20 (approx. UK £17 / USD $21)). An open yoga hall is available for guests, where daily yoga or meditation classes are offered. Private sessions are available for a fee.
Both the Ayurveda Village and Island Resort offer an outdoor pool. Internet access is also available, along with a shop, a gym, a library, and a butterfly garden. For active guests, various activities are available, including fishing, kayaking, and excursions to typical fishing villages or to Neyyar Dam and Sivananda Ashram. Depending on the season, evening entertainment is available, and guests can attend lectures on Ayurveda, cooking classes, and workshops such as palm reading or pottery. Workshops can be booked and paid for on-site, subject to a minimum of 2 participants.
A total of 86 cottages are spread across the area. In the Ayurveda Village, 16 cottages overlook the pool exclusively for Ayurveda guests. Alternative accommodation in the resort, interspersed with green spaces and water features, includes 44 Land Cottages. Slightly set apart are 8 Premium Land Cottages. Tastefully floating on the Backwaters arm, 16 Floating Cottages represent another highlight. Floating Cottages are not recommended for Ayurveda guests.
